Mitt Romney

Posted on December 7, 2007 by marcus

Jessica Hagy, the author of indexed, is going to be covering the 2008 election for McClatchy news service’s alt.campaign. I love her sketches and think that this may be one of my all time favorites of hers. (Click to see it full size).
plural marriage

I’m not a big fan of Romney’s politics, but being a Mormon myself, I have a great deal of sympathy for him in having to answer questions about his faith. I find it ironic that a man who has only been married to one woman (and for nearly 40 years) is asked questions about polygamy, while Rudy Giuliani, who’s on his third wife doesn’t face questions about his multiple spouses.

Sadly, I think Sean Hannity had it right yesterday when he said that there’s a lot of anti-LDS bigotry in this country, and it would seem that it’s not going to go away anytime soon.

In his comments last week Romney said that his religion will make him a better President. And today he acts surprised and refuses to answer doctrinal questions from Huckabee. If he had instead said that the first amendment prohibits religious tests in order to hold office then he could avoid all doctrinal questions by simply refusing to submit to this religious test.

It seems I may be wrong about anti-LDS bigotry. Geoff B. over at Times and Seasons has started a collection of nice things people are saying about Mormons.

Don’t be so quick to dismiss the anti-LDS bigotry. This political cartoon came out the day after Romney’s speach. WARNING!! it will offend some LDS readers.

I’m not dismissing it, clearly it’s still prevalent. I’ve been in plenty of forums where saying derogatory things about any protected class was prohibited, but making bigoted remarks about Mormons was condoned. I just found it encouraging that there were plenty of people coming out in defense of Mormons, if not Mormonism, and correctly identifying bigots.
