This morning I was reading Joe McNally’s blog. Today’s entry was a guest post by Brad, Joe’s assitant for the last two and half years who is moving on to bigger and better things. As I read Brad’s description of the things that working with Joe entailed I couldn’t help but be envious of the incredible opportunity this guy had of learning at the side of one of the truly great photographers. What really struck me though, was that when this guy started with Joe he was essentially a novice photographer. Stories like this are probably bad for my psyche, because seeing other people doing things that would truly excite me, makes me think that I could do that, and I spend several days fantasizing about what it would be like. Traveling the globe to shoot all kinds of interesting people and places. It would be pretty extraordinary. Unfortunately, getting from where I am now to there, requires a level of commitment and sacrifice that I couldn’t in good conscience subject my family to. So I dream about one day, and think of how I can take baby steps to get from here to there, without causing unnecessary hardships on my family.
